What Causes Muscle Cramps?

http://www.webmd.com/pain-management/muscle-spasms-cramps-charley-horse

Many things can trigger a muscle cramp. They include:

Poor blood circulation in your legs

Working calf muscles too hard while exercising

Not stretching enough

Being active in hot temperatures

Muscle fatigue

Dehydration

Magnesium and/or potassium deficiency

A problem such as a spinal cord injury or pinched nerve in your neck or back

What causes muscle cramps?

The cause of muscle cramps isn’t always known. Muscle cramps may be brought on by many conditions or activities, such as:

Exercising, injury, or overuse of muscles.

Pregnancy. Cramps may occur because of decreased amounts of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, especially in the later months of pregnancy.

Exposure to cold temperatures, especially to cold water.

Other medical conditions, such as blood flow problems (peripheral arterial disease), kidney diseasethyroid disease, and multiple sclerosis.

Standing on a hard surface for a long time, sitting for a long time, or putting your legs in awkward positions while you sleep.

Not having enough potassiumcalcium, and other minerals in your blood.

Being dehydrated, which means that your body has lost too much fluid.

Taking certain medicines, such as antipsychotics, birth control pillsdiureticsstatins, and steroids.

How can you stop a muscle cramp when it happens?

How To Stop A Muscle Cramp?

http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/tc/nighttime-leg-cramps-topic-overview#1

You may need to try several different ways to stop a muscle cramp before you find what works best for you. Here are some things you can try:

Stretch and massage the muscle.

Take a warm shower or bath to relax the muscle. A heating pad placed on the muscle can also help.

Try using an ice or cold pack. Always keep a cloth between your skin and the ice pack.

Take an over-the-counter pain medicine, such as acetaminophen(Tylenol), ibuprofen (AdvilMotrin), or naproxen (Aleve). Be safe with medicines. Read and follow all instructions on the label.

If your doctor prescribes medicines for muscle cramps, take them exactly as prescribed. Call your doctor if you have any problems with your medicine.

Drink plenty of fluids. Sports drinks, such as Gatorade, will often help leg cramps.

Prevent night leg cramps

By Mayo Clinic Staff

Nighttime leg cramps often strike just as you’re falling asleep or waking up. To prevent these involuntary contractions of your leg muscles, usually in the back of your lower leg, stretch your legs before you climb under the covers. Wear shoes with proper support. Untuck the covers at the foot of your bed. And drink plenty of fluids during the day.

Leg Muscle Cramps Prevention Lymph Drainage Acupressure

NMRCC

Leg cramps are the result of auto response of your own immune system and alarming ability. When your body can not have good circulation especially on lower trunk and legs, lymphatic system is also affected. Cramps and spasms occur like an alarm which forces legs to have a chance to exercise.

NMRCC has done numerous experiments and find

performing proper acupressure may help to prevent

leg cramps. The name of the experiment in NMRCC

is called LMCP, Leg Muscle Cramps Prevention.

The first group of experiment is using

LDrA, Lymph Drainage Acupressure.

The experiment can be performed between partners or by yourself where cramps normally occur in the nighttime. When LDrA is performed by partners for cramps prevention, the experiment is called LMCP PLDrA.

There are some procedures involved in LMCP PLDrA:

  1. Energizing Acupressure on 3 Yin Channels and acupoints such as San-Yin-Jiao.
    2. Energizing Acupressure on 3 Yang Channels and acupoints such as Zu-San-Li.
  2. Lymph Detoxification Water-Retention Relief Drainage Acupressure on Leg 6 Channels bi-directionally.
  3. Lymph Nodes Vessels Enhancement Acupressure on Popliteal Nodes, Inferior Superficial Inguinal Nodes.
  4. Visceral Lymph Nodes Vessels Enhancement Acupressure Groins Abdomen Ren-Mai 6 Yin Channels
